Thanks Kendall! It's actually an orange chisel tip sharpie hi-lighter, 75 cents in the bookstore I think. To get the look I scanned the sketchbook page and played with the layer styles. If you like I can look and find out exactly what it was; I think it was multiply plus a color overlay
The chisel tip sharpie gets a natural grit like that?
Yup! At least, a bit. I think it the majority of the "grit" might have come from the way the line work was extracted and then filled with color. It's probably a happy accident due to variations in the transparency of the pigment on the paper. When viewed at full transparency, it looked like normal hi-lighter, but when the color was selected and painted over at full opacity, semi-transparent areas became solid and turned into the "grit"— but I bet it would be easy to replicate using the same or similar method.
